Dec 12, 2019 · Brazing Cast Iron Manifold White Cast Iron. When gray cast iron is heated to the molten state, the carbon completely dissolves in the iron, probably combining chemically with it. If this molten metal is cooled quickly, the two elements remain in the combined state, and white cast iron

May 04, 2015 · The problem with cast iron, especially exhaust manifolds, is that it rusts. The constant hot cold cycling creates a lot of moisture, which causes rust on the cast iron, wrecking havoc on their appearance. The typical restoration practice involves cleaning and painting. Painting exhaust manifolds has its own set of problems.
Feb 19, 2012 · You guys know how hard it is sometime to weld an old junky exhaust manifold? I have done hundreds of them over the last 34 years most of them stick with Ni rod and some brazed. Some worked well some didn't. So move ahead 30 years i picked up some Crown Alloys .035 44 30 mig wire for cast iron. Its used with Argon and works great.
Dec 12, 2019 · Brazing Cast Iron Manifold White Cast Iron. When gray cast iron is heated to the molten state, the carbon completely dissolves in the iron, probably combining chemically with it. If this molten metal is cooled quickly, the two elements remain in the combined state, and white cast iron is formed.
Dec 03, 2010 · Cast doesn't tend to crack (depending on it's age and nickel content) and retains more heat in the exhaust gases. For absolute all out maximum power, an equal length tubular manifold will be better (which is why the fastest 4wd drag cars have them, though they are designed very specifically to suit the engine and cams they are using).
New Process for Welding Cast Iron Hello, I read your suggestions on welding cast iron exhaust manifolds and thought I would tell you about how I fix them. So far none of the manifolds I have fixed have ever come back because of breaking again or cracking by the welds.

Choosing electrodes for welding cast iron typically comes down to three thingscost, machine ability, and whether the weld is single or multiple pass. Tech Rod 99 (AWS class ENi CI) is a nominally 99% Nickel electrode. Nickel is expensive, and so, therefore, is this premium electrode.
The primary difference in production between wrought iron and cast iron is that cast iron is not worked with hammers and tools. There are also differences in composition—cast iron contains 2–4% carbon and other alloys, and 1–3% of silicon, which improves the casting performance of the molten metal.

Jan 27, 2012 · They used to warp and the end tubes would pull towards the center enough that you couldn't start the exhaust bolts. It was bad enough that several tool companies made spreaders that you used to spread the tubes enough to get the bolts started. The later manifolds like that had a reinforcment bar that tied the individual runners together and kept them from warping.
